Portugal is not for everyone - READ THIS BEFORE YOU MOVEPortugal has undergone a MASSIVE PR blitz over the last 10 years, sold as a dream life. Cheap. Relaxed. Welcoming. Simple.That’s not the whole story. It’s a real estate agent selling IG filtered realities. That’s not to say there is not truth, but life in Portugal comes with plenty of challenges. I’ll cover some of those here so you can make the decision if it’s something you’d like to weather.Before I rain on your parade, let me reiterate what IS great about Portugal. It’s a safe, affordable country to live in. It has public transit, great food, plenty of grocery stores, and stunning beaches. The weather is great in Madeira. It gets too hot in summer for my liking on the mainland. Those “heatwaves” seem to me as the new regular weather patterns these days just like they are in Southern California.<div class="iframe-wrapper"><iframe src="https://iframe.mediadelivery.net/embed/431082/0acde4d8-86f5-4d86-ad3b-668a52fcf657?autoplay=false" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></div>Ok, now for the reasons you clicked on this article…<ol><li>PORTUGAL DOSEN’T VALUE FOLLOWTHROUGH OR PRODUCTIVITY</li></ol>Portugal does not organize life around predictability or outcomes. It prioritizes rest, time off, holidays, family, and personal rhythm. Work fits around life, not the other way around. Deadlines don’t exist. Follow through depends on mood, timing, and availability rather than obligation. People often return to tasks when they feel ready, not what you would consider an acceptable amount of time. It is common to have appointments with a repair person and have them no show, no call and not respond to texts for 1+ weeks.This creates friction for newcomers who come from cultures where reliability, urgency, and finished work signal respect. In Portugal, taking time off signals health and balance. If you expect consistency, fast service, or strong accountability, this mismatch becomes exhausting fast. Be prepared to channel your inner happy space because you will be provided with endless opportunities to do so.<ul><li>Bureaucracy moves slowly.</li><li>Processes change without notice.</li><li>Answers depend on who you speak to.</li></ul>Let me give you an example. when I attempted to get a health number, a piece of info needed to register with and access the public health system. After some research I found the local office I needed to visit and after asking multiple people at various windows where to go, being misdirected twice, I found the spot. The attendant was not assisting anyone but said that they were only open for another 10 minutes and while I had all of the paperwork necessary they wouldn’t have time to complete my process. When I returned the following week and waited an hour to see them they said I had to come and schedule an appointment ahead of time upstairs. They said this was a new policy that just went into effect… They only help 4 people a day.If you want speed, certainty, good service, or efficiency - Portugal is not a good fit.Thou Shall Not Loose Patience Another thing I found surprising is how strongly frustration is received. If you show even mild exasperation about a problem not being resolved, the dynamic can shut down completely. For example, my apartment’s AC was broken when I moved in. It stayed broken for months, during the summer, even though I paid for a unit advertised with air conditioning. When I finally expressed frustration, not anger, just exhaustion, the one person who could actually fix the issue disengaged. Communication stopped. Responses slowed or disappeared. The problem did not move forward.The lesson was clear. In Portugal, expressing urgency or frustration, even politely, backfires. Maintaining calm, warmth, and patience matters more than pushing for a solution. It’s truly the only way forward that gives you a chance of resolution. For people used to direct problem solving, this adjustment is hard and rarely talked about.<ol start="2"><li>PORTUGAL IMMIGRATION IS HARDER THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE</li></ol>How many posts have you seen that proclaim “Move to Portugal with a Digital Nomad Visa” or “Golden Visa” as if with a wave of a wand you will be granted access to this magical land?AIMA is Portugal’s immigration authority and they are a HOT MESS! I hired an immigration attorney (more on that in other articles) and they had to regularly sue AIMA just to get appointments for their clients! You need Herculean patience and hire yourself as a part time project manager to push your process through (politely of course, see #1).<ul><li>Appointments cancel and push you back months for no reason.</li><li>Timelines stretch out with no guarantees or by X date you will definitely get an appointment.</li><li>Rules change.</li><li>Different officials have different interpretations</li><li>They ask you to travel for your appointment (that they might cancel with little warning)</li></ul>My neighbor told me that the process was so arduous to get a Golden Visa that she went back to Ireland (where she’s from) and got citizenship (she was eligible) as that process plus returning and filing through the EU treaty was easier somehow!You might think… “Well that’s because they didn’t hire experienced professionals to support.” People assume hiring an immigration lawyer makes this process simple. Often, it does not. It didn’t for me. It actually made it worse because I hired the wrong firm. I did it even as an experienced expat and nomad, traveling and living abroad off an on since 2010. The stress that will be inflicted due to the immigration process and the logistics of a move to Portugal should not be underestimated. Try Portugal on before you go through this mind bending/breaking process. Stay in the town you are considering for your entire 90 day tourist visa. Regroup outside of country and decide if you think it is the right fit for the long haul. If you can do this multiple times at different times of year even better. You might even decide to live ½ of your year in one country and the other ½ in Portugal, no paperwork!People commit to the immigration process before understanding what they are embarking on and if the culture and space is even a true long term fit. Just because it’s safe and affordable doesn’t necessarily mean it checks all of your critical needs.If you’ve decided that Portugal IS your place then consider staying in Madeira and applying through a “<a target="" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.cre8iveorigins.life/en/course-detail/how-to-move-to-portugal-fast-track/35637/">Fast Track</a>” I found while living there.
