I think it's a symptom.Every time I've experienced imposter syndrome, it's been because I was about to do something that mattered to me. Whether it was launching a business, teaching a new class, building a piece of software, or speaking in front of a room full of people, the same thoughts would show up.Who am I to do this?Someone else already does this better.What if people realize I have no idea what I'm doing?If that sounds familiar, welcome to being human. I've stopped believing that confidence comes first. I think we've been sold that idea for a long time, that one day we'll wake up feeling ready and then we'll finally pursue the things we've been dreaming about.I don't buy it anymore.Confidence isn't what gets you started. It's the byproduct of starting. Fear, on the other hand, has incredible staying power. People often talk about overcoming fear as though it's something you graduate from. That’s not it at all. Fear is the family/friend that always overstays its welcome. As I grow, I learn how to minimize its influence over my decisions.Fear is here and as part of me is welcome in the car, but it has to get into the back seat. When asked if I conquered my fear of heights when I do something like walk across a super high suspension bridge, I answer, “Nope, but I regularly face it and don’t let it keep me from doing things I want to do.” I'm not trying to eliminate fear, that’s like trying to mop up the ocean shore.AttentionThe mindset shift that has been a game changer for me. Part of what makes it possible is something easily missed… It has to do with where I focus my attention.Whenever I'm caught in imposter syndrome, I'm focused inward. Is this good enough? Am I experienced enough? Does someone else have more credentials? More followers? A better website? A more polished course?The moment I shift my attention toward the people I wanted to serve, those questions dissipate. Instead of asking whether I was qualified enough, I started asking, What problem am I solving? Instead of wondering whether my work was perfect, I asked, Would this have helped me five years ago?That's become one of my favorite filters.Because a lot of the things I create are things I wish had existed when I needed them. If I'm solving a problem that I genuinely struggled with, there's a pretty good chance I'm not the only one.Imposter syndrome thrives in the abstract.<ul><li>"I'm not good enough."</li><li>According to who?</li><li>Compared to whom?</li><li>By what measurement?</li></ul>There usually isn't one. That's why it's such a persuasive story. It doesn't have to prove itself because the standard is invisible. Every time you accomplish something, the goalpost quietly moves again.I've found it much more helpful to replace abstract fears with concrete observations.<ul><li>Am I more capable than I was last year?</li><li>Can I help someone who's just beginning?</li><li>Do I know something today that would've saved me months—or years—of frustration?</li></ul>Those questions have answers. The abstract ones don't. We've created a strange culture around expertise. We've convinced ourselves that unless we're in the top one percent of a field, we shouldn't teach, share, or contribute.That couldn’t be more wrong and the ideology deprives the world from your contributions. Learning from someone who is just a few steps ahead of you on this journey, right-sizes your experience. They still remember what it felt like to be stuck and understand what they needed when they were there.<ul><li>They remember the confusing parts.</li><li>They remember the mistakes.</li><li>They remember what finally made everything click.</li><li>That perspective is incredibly valuable.</li></ul>Imposter syndrome doesn't just rob us of confidence. It often robs other people of help they genuinely need. That's why I focus my attention on where and how I can be useful.Purpose has a remarkable way of quieting self-doubt. Not because fear disappears, but because service becomes a navigator and fear blurs out in the background since it’s in the last row of the rear facing station wagon.And when that happens, you're no longer trying to prove yourself. Instead, you’re finding paths of service which lead to meaningful and fruitful partnerships that changes lives, yours included.
